Bogosto Kearns instructed
the steelworkers in stained glass techniques for several years before designing
The Heartbeat of the Quench. Kearns, an artist working in glass for over 20
years has exhibited both publicly and privately throughout the courtry with
numerous commissions in this area. She has been teaching stained glass since
1988 and has participated in many art fairs.
Bill
Pascale has been in the building industry
for 10 years and spent many years working in Kearns' glass studio while studying
architecture at Kent State University. He has worked on many projects in the
tri-state area and is the owner of Outside the Box, a design-build firm in the
Pitsburgh area.
The
title of the memorial originated with both artists' connection to the Pittsburgh
area, where as a child, Kearns' grandmother often regarded the "smoky Pittsburgh
skies" as a symbol of life. Pascale was familiar with this creed as Kearns
and Pascale are mother and son who worked together to create this moving representation
of steelworkers.
The following steelworkers executed this piece.

I would like to thank the USWA for allowing me to use the text from their Memorial brochure for this portion of my site. Working with everyone on this project was one of the finest experiences I have had as an artist and as a teacher. It was my pleasure and my privilege to be a part of such a fine tribute and to have met each and every paerson who contributed to it.
